Our Community Initiative is now endorsed by World Design Capital

The cross-border sanitation problem and incapacity of the wastewater treatment plant provides a serious design challenge. With the rapid growth in population, increasingly residents of Tijuana are without wastewater plumbing. Urban sanitation is an urgent issue that the two cities, San Diego and Tijuana, need to resolve since pollution threatens the partnership of the two cities. The project will relieve the burden on current infrastructure as a sustainable sanitation approach by providing an  ecological solution for waste management. The waterless toilet converts through a composting process liquid and solid waste to fertilizer and soil, providing nutrients needed in common agricultural practices. The project will provide the basic tools for jumpstarting a social ecological system which can transform the Tijuana River Valley into a fertile healthy and productive landscape. Workshops will empower the community to take action to improve their sanitation.

Waterless Composting Toilet Community Workshop in Rural China

To mitigate the impact of algae blooms in the local river ecology, we join the workshop series of Hedgehog Organic Farm and advance the permaculture practice with a public toilet.  In this prototype we have adapted the Swedish waterless toilet to achieve new composting functions utilizing local materials for the composting process and enclosure of the restroom.  The community workshop was joined by children and parents of all ages and lead by a group of architects, material scientists, industrial designers, and farmers.
